(Linus) Alvin Stomberg
(Linus) Alvin Stomberg was born on 08 March 1880 in Carver, Minnesota as the first child of Andrew Peter Stomberg and Charlotta Andreasdotter. He had three siblings, namely: Edgar Gerhard “George”, Elli Lorinda, and Esther Almina. When he was 35, he married Ada Emerentia Brahee, daughter of August (Pettersson) Brahee and Anna-Stina Johansdotter, on 22 November 1915 in Siloah Parsonage with Rev. Lundquist officiating.
(Linus) Alvin Stomberg was baptized on 10 March 1880 in West Union Lutheran Church. He was also known as /Alvin/. He died on 04 June 1953 at home – Traverse County – Parnell Township – RR Graceville. His cause of death was heart attack. He was buried in Siloah Cemetary, Parnell Township – Traverse Co – RR Graceville, Minnesota.
Ada Emerentia (Brahee) Stomberg
Ada Emerentia Brahee was born on 06 June 1887 in West Union, Carver County Minnesota as the sixth child of August (Pettersson) Brahee and Anna-Stina Johansdotter. She had seven siblings, namely: Alfrida Maria, Alfreda Mathilda, Gustaf Oskar, Ada Axelina, Oscar Adolph, Anna Theodora, and Walter Edwin. When she was 28, she married (Linus) Alvin Stomberg, son of Andrew Peter Stomberg and Charlotta Andreasdotter, on 22 November 1915 in Siloah Parsonage with Rev. Lundquist officiating.
Ada Emerentia Brahee was confirmed in 1903 in West Union Church. She died on 10 February 1983 in Wheaton Nursing Home – Traverse County – Wheaton, Minnesota. She was buried on 14 February 1983 in Siloah Cemetary, Graceville Minnesota.
(Linus) Alvin Stomberg and Ada Emerentia Brahee had the following children:
- Charlotte Alvina Stomberg was born on 14 May 1916 at home (old house) – Arthur Township – Traverse County – RR Graceville, Minnesota. She died on 15 May 1998 at daughter, Alice’s home – RR Smithton, Missouri. She married Paul Joseph Wiese on 18 January 1939 in Trinity First Evangelical Lutheran Church – 1115 E. 19th St. Minneapolis. Minnesota.
- Edith Emerentia Stomberg was born on 15 February 1918 at home (old house) – Arthur Township – Traverse County – RR Graceville, Minnesota. She died on 16 August 2008 in Monticello-Big Lake Nursing Home, Monticello, Minnesota. She married Harold Sidney Jordan on 03 September 1939 at bride’s parents home. She married Clarence Henning Lundborg on 06 August 1950.
- (Anna) Mildred Stomberg was born on 12 September 1921 at home (old house) – Arthur Township – Traverse County – RR Graceville, Minnesota. She died on 18 November 2012 in Hospice Care at Bethany Community in Alexandria. She married Orin Sherold Toso on 29 August 1943 in Siloah Lutheran Church, Parnell Township, Graceville, Minnesota.
- Adolph Albin Stomberg was born on 05 April 1923 at home (old house) – Traverse County – Arthur Township- RR Graceville. He died on 12 April 1923 at home.
- Hildur Eleanor Stomberg was born on 16 June 1925 at home (old house) Arthur Township – Traverse County – RR Graceville, Minnesota. She died on 28 January 2014 in Alexandria, Minnesota. She married Cleo Nolan Dyer on 11 May 1947 in Siloah Lutheran Church – Parnell Township -Traverse County-Graceville, Minnesota.
- Eldor Alvin Stomberg was born on 23 May 1928 at home (new house) Arthur Township – Traverse County – RR Graceville, Minnesota. He died on 02 June 2005 in St. Croix Hospital. He married Madeline Alice Mollenhoff on 19 January 1949 in Oronwood, Michigan. He married Jaquelyn Merrigan on 15 March 1962. He married Cleopatra Mecie Lange on 01 November 1969 in First Lutheran Church, Taylor’s Falls, Minnesota.
The Early Years - Alvin & Ada

They moved to the Graceville area in March of 1891. Alvin was eleven years old.

born in Minnesota and 8th from the bottom.
Below him is Charlotta age 37 born in Sweden.
Below Charlotta are the four children:

Alvin was in the first confirmation class at Siloah Church and George was in the second confirmation class.

Alvin with cousins Algot and Edith Jackson. Algot and Edith were children of Anna Andreasdotter Jackson and Herman Jackson.
Anna was a sister of Charlotta, mother of Alvin Stomberg.
Alice was told by Aunt Hildur that these three went to Texas to farm.
Edith married Arthur Soderberg and Algot married Sadie Peterson.
We have a photo of Alvin swimming in Lake Traverse. This is a lake close to Graceville area where we often went. We have no idea as to when this was taken but probably during his early years, when he was a young man but not a child.

Alice said Uncle Eldor told her that Grandpa Alvin had taken a trip to South America. From there he went to Spain and back across the ocean to New York City. We think this picture must have been taken when he was on that trip. Alice had the original photo and gave it to the Carver Historical Society.

Edith, Charlotte, and Mildred

Hildur said they were her diapers on the line in background.
The handwriting – it says Our House in 1927 – is Mildred’s and the photo is from her album.
Hildur was born in 1925 in the old house and Eldor was born in 1928 in the new house. The house was newly built around 1926 and one can read about this time frame in Charlotte’s story. The house had electrical wires run even though electricity had not yet come to the mile the house was on. Alvin went to the neighbors asking that they consider paying for the REA (Rural Electric Association) to run electricity to the area. A number said “we’ve gotten along without it, don’t need it, so wouldn’t sign up. The membership fee was $5.00.” It wasn’t until 1940 or 41 that electricity was finally installed. Cleo and Hildur Dyer moved to the house when Doug was a baby and Alvin and Ada moved to a smaller house – the ‘retirement home’. This house was torn down after Hildur died. So many people had moved from the area and there was no market for the home but there was for the land. – Alice

We think this was the day the family went to settle Anna Stina Brahee’s estate in St. Paul. The capitol building is in the background.
The handwriting on the back of this photo says they are celebrating Grandma’s birthday. I think the writing is by Ada but I am not sure.
Grandpa Alvin Stomberg is center front and Grandma Ada is behind the lady in black in the center. I am not sure of the others.
Misc Photos:
I, Laura, have the pitcher and love using it but would like to pass it on to the next generation. I do not know anything about it other than it was a wedding gift to Ada and Alvin.

Kids When Younger
About 1925 Edith, Mildred, and Charlotte. They had taken their tables, chairs and dolls outside to play.

Adolph Albin Stomberg 5 – 12 April 1923. Our mom, Charlotte, still remembered her little brother. She would have been almost seven when he was born and died.
Cousins – Vivian Stomber, Mildred and Charlotte with Hildur about 1927. Vivian wore shoes and stockings quite often. Laura remembers mom (Charlotte) telling us her mother said, ‘no bare feet before the first of May’.

This is a photo of Hildur when she was twelve or thirteen. Do they still have photos in holders like this?
This is a favorite of mine. Such personalities came through. ‘Me’ is Mildred and I appreciate her photos so much. Mom (Charlotte) and Edith lost so many photos in home fires. Mom is not in this photo and was probably already gone to Minneapolis. She was born in 1916 and this was taken in the late 1930s.

Charley (Charlotte), Hildur, Edith and Eldor (you must look closely)
Elsie and Larry were the Carrington neighbors. Alice remembers their mailbox was a mile further on the road to the left. It was a wagon wheel with maybe 10 mailboxes.
When Alice was a little girl and visiting, the Carrington family gave Alice a doll to hold. Alice doesn’t remember much about it other than she did not like being the center of attention. She thinks Roger or Doug went to school with Larry Carrington. When Elsie was older, she moved to Minneapolis.
She had twin girls and lived with Paul and Charlotte (Stomberg) Wiese on Dupont.
Alice remembers they were staying in a room with a Murphy bed and the babies were in basinets. The babies wore bracelets to identify them.
Later Elsie moved west and sent the twins grown out clothes to Arlys and me.

Eldor was the only boy and the youngest so the four girls were used to working hard physically. Eldor was born in 1928 and mom (Charlotte) the oldest girl was born in 1916.
Mildred and Hildur
Mildred was born in 1921 and Hildur was born in 1925. Adolph Albin was born and died in 1923. This meant that there was four years between the two girls.
Family Photos 3
Mildred had this photo of Alvin Stomberg in her album and we are thankful to have it. Grandpa Stomberg, when I got to know him later in life always wore overalls except on Sunday or for special occasions. He was tall and thin. Charlotte (mom) said she sometimes felt like the hired hand on the farm and Edith remembers driving the tractor. I think all the kids helped with whatever chores were to be done be they inside or out.

The Honebrinks were from Ada’s side of the family. Her cousin was Lillie Winifred Lydia Williams Honebrink who was the third child of William Anderson and Alfreda Mathilda Brahee Anderson. Alfreda was a sister of Ada’s. The younger Anderson children changed their name to Williams because of the number of Andersons. The parents kept the name of Anderson, however. Please note that Mildred has spelled the name as Honerbrink. It was Honebrink.
The Honebrinks as well as most of Ada’s family lived in the Carver area.

Mom’s (Charlotte) note regarding the photo – “In June of 1938 while I was on vacation, we had this family picture taken at Nelson Studio in Wheaton. Us girls had all washed our hair (it was probably a Saturday) and pinned it up. So, at noon, my dad announced we could go and have our family picture taken. We each had one ‘good’ dress, so changed and about 1pm we went to have our picture taken. Boy, were we dressed up!
Millie said she was confirmed July 17 of 1937 and mom (Ada) made her dress. In 1938 she made a bolero to wear with it. Afterwards, we went for an ice cream cone. We sent Eldor to different places to check out where we could get a 3-dip cone. A 3-dip cone was made for 2 dips side by side and the 3rd on top.”
I have only been aware of this photo (taken the same day) when Viktoria Unosson sent it from Sweden asking if I could tell her who all was in it. This was in 1926.
The difference is Eldor is no longer in the photo and Paul is holding Jerry while Edith is holding Lester.
